Night Vision by Frank King6/26/2023 ![]() I started talking with Talia’s husband, Ron Carner, and we quickly realized that we’d gone to rival Brooklyn public high schools-he to James Madison and I to Erasmus-and as soon as we discovered our mutual love of basketball, we did what aging Brooklyn hoop junkies usually do when they get together: we exchanged tales of local ballplayers we’d seen and played against-All-City and All-American players who had gone on to celebrated college and pro careers. ![]() On a cool, early summer evening in June 2015, I was at the Friars Club in midtown Manhattan to celebrate my friend Talia Carner’s new novel, Hotel Moscow. The interpretation of cultures 19736/26/2023 ![]() ![]() Geertz’s position illustrates the interpretive approach to symbolic anthropology, while Turner’s illustrates the symbolic approach. Victor Turner, on the other hand, states that symbols initiate social action and are “determinable influences inclining persons and groups to action” (1967:36). According to Clifford Geertz, humans are in need of symbolic “sources of illumination” to orient themselves with respect to the system of meaning that is any particular culture (1973a:45). ![]() Symbolic anthropology studies symbols and the processes, such as myth and ritual, by which humans assign meanings to these symbols to address fundamental questions about human social life (Spencer 1996:535). These interpretations form a shared cultural system of meaning–i.e., understandings shared, to varying degrees, among members of the same society (Des Chene 1996:1274). Symbolic anthropology studies the way people understand their surroundings, as well as the actions and utterances of the other members of their society. ![]()

Allende isabel paula6/25/2023 ![]() It is divided into two sections by the simultaneous description of two pivotal events within the entwined narratives: Paula's transfer from a Spanish hospital to a home in San Francisco, where she will eventually die, and the author's account of the 1973 military overthrow of Chile's first socialist president, her great-uncle, Salvador Allende. ![]() Despite a tendency to revel in sentimentality, this is an engagingly readable and revealing book. Certain figures from Allende's past are presented as the inspirations for her novels' characters as she documents her family life, a surreal three years spent in Lebanon, her first marriage, and the early years of her career, writing advice columns and horoscopes. The book's narrative shifts back and forth from a detailed, magical description of Chilean-born Allende's life to a somewhat numbing account of Paula's deteriorating condition. This volume was written over a one-year period during which her 28-year-old daughter lay in a coma, struck down by a mysterious illness. ![]() In her first nonfiction work, Allende (The Infinite Plan, 1993, etc.) produces a beautiful and deeply personal account of the process of grieving and the power of stories. ![]()

![]() To do it, we need lots of breakthroughs in science and engineering. We need to accomplish something gigantic we have never done before, much faster than we have ever done anything similar. There’s no scenario in which we keep adding carbon to the atmosphere and the world stops getting hotter, and the hotter it gets, the harder it will be for humans to survive, much less thrive. nce greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere, they stay there for a very long time. Greenhouse gases trap heat, causing the average surface temperature of the earth to go up. The reason we need to get to zero is simple. Some companies may go under in the coming years that comes with the territory when you’re doing cutting-edge work.Techno-fixes are not sufficient, but they are necessary. But we cannot keep the earth livable without it. ![]() When it comes to climate change, I know innovation isn’t the only thing we need. ![]() ![]() And we need to create and roll out breakthrough technologies that can take us the rest of the way. ![]() We need to deploy the tools we already have, like solar and wind, faster and smarter. ![]() ![]() ![]() A more subtle way to exploit it is to make a concession the rejection-then-retreat technique. The rule can be exploited as the exchange does not need to be equal - we do not like feeling indebted. The rule also holds when the favor is unsolicited - even if unwelcome.Liking a person has no effect on whether they feel the obligation to return the favor. ![]() This rule holds throughout human society.Ex: if one person does us a favor, we should try to do them one in return.Rule for reciprocation: we should try to repay, in kind, what another person has provided us.Contrast principle: if the the second item in a presentation is fairly different from the first, we will tend to see it as more different than it actually is.There are several components to these “weapons” of automatic influence: they are nearly mechanical in activation, they can be exploited, and they can be easy to trigger.Automatic, stereotyped behaviour is prevalent in much of human action - it is often efficient, and other times necessary.Adding the word “because” when asking a small favor vastly increases compliance, regardless if the reason is a good one. ![]() |
