Nyxia book 46/30/2023 ![]() ![]() But at his core, he’s good, and cares for the people around him. He can be rough, and he feels no shame in beating someone up if they insult him. However, characters that were introduced later on in the book seemed half-formed and unrealistic.Įmmett: Emmett is a sort of antagonist-y protagonist that you can’t help but root for. I felt their pain and their joy, and they seemed very real to me. ![]() When they were in the training scenes, I had a good grasp on what was going on, but it was hard to completely understand because the setting was never fully explained. Unfortunately, I have a fairly large issue with the writing: the settings aren’t explained thoroughly or well enough. The writing was great! It made me feel as if I was really inside Emmett’s head, going through the experiences he was going through, meeting the people he was meeting. ![]() It pulled me in by the first chapter and I couldn’t stop reading (which would explain why I finished it in eight hours with only one break). The plot was intriguing, twisting when I least expected it. It would make a pretty great movie! However, I had some issues with its cleanness that I will discuss later. ![]() It was like Survivor and The Hunger Games in space! The characters were incredibly diverse and well-developed. The eight who pass get unlimited riches and search a recently discovered planet for the new “black gold,” nyxia. Nyxia tells the story of fifteen-year-old Emmett, who is enlisted along with nine other teens to partake in a competition. ![]()

Darcy in pride and prejudice6/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Ailwood notes that in their first meeting, he waits until he gets her attention and then insults her: “not pretty enough to tempt me”. Darcy “is the hero in whom sexual desire is most overt and overpowering … The Sexual charge is stronger in Pride & Prejudice than any of the other novels … (P.86)”, he wrote.ĭarcy falls in love with Elizabeth entirely against his will and upbringing. ![]() One member recollected that Richard Jenkyns in A Fine Brush of Ivory had described Pride & Prejudice as erotic. Elizabeth, however, is constrained by female propriety and can only gaze unreservedly at Darcy’s portrait and his magnificent house and property – handsome, lofty and fine. Ailwood believes that the male (or erotic) gaze, focalisation or the one who sees, and scopophilia, gaining sexual pleasure from looking, were the keys to understanding the passion. The powerful sexual desire experienced first by Darcy and later by Elizabeth is expressed by Austen using many innovative narrative techniques. Sarah’s analysis was part of her doctoral thesis entitled What a Man Ought to Be. Charlotte Bronte’s criticism of Jane Austen in which she stated: “the passions were unknown to her” was entirely reversed during a discussion of member Sarah Ailwood’s analysis of Pride & Prejudice by JASACT members at their November meeting. ![]()

![]() ![]() Here’s the first paragraph, so you can see why:First I’d like to state for the record that the whole notion of writing this down was not my idea. This means that the book grabbed me on the first page the first paragraph told me that I’d be reading the whole novel now. There’s a reason, though, that Hand’s Unearthly, despite not being my thing plot-wise grabbed me years ago. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t want to read it eventually, but I figured I’d give the egalley a couple of pages, and I’d DNF it with every intention to come back to it if it didn’t grab me. The Last Time We Say Goodbye seems to me almost a character study of dealing with the loss of a loved one to suicide.Since I wasn’t in the mood for a darker contemporary, I wasn’t sure if I was actually going to read The Last Time We Say Goodbye. ![]() Because this is the only way I know to reach for you.” In just those lines, I feel pain and heartbreak. ![]() As soon as I hit the dedication, which I usually skip, I knew that The Last Time We Say Goodbye would be an incredibly sad book. Whatever the circumstances, I’ll always be hoping for swoons. For more reviews, gifs, Cover Snark and more, visit A Reader of Fictions.Despite the sad title, part of me was hoping for the romance of Cynthia Hand’s unearthly. ![]()
